Welcome to Klaipeda
Klaipėda is Lithuania‘s only gateway to the sea, and the most northerly ice-free port on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea as well as one of the oldest city in Lithuania established in 1252. Klaipeda, known formerly as Memel, shares an interactive multicultural history. The footprints of German, Swedish, Dutch, Russian and other cultures are found in the features of the old town and surroundings.
For those who enjoy the uniqueness of nature, visiting Klaipėda is a must. It takes just a few minutes to cross the Lagoon to find The Curonian Spit – the highest sand dunes in Europe. Its beauty and value was recognized by UNESCO and therefore included in the World Heritage List.
Right at the sea gate one finds the Martime Museum - Aquarium. It is situated in the 18th century fortress and boasts being one of the most visited museums in Lithuania. Klaipeda is famous for its summer festivals, maritime traditions and the Sea Festival / Baltic Sail event celebrated annually at the last weekend of July since 1934. The Sea Festival attracts more than half a million visitors every year. It is the biggest traditional festival in Lithuania - full of happiness, excitements and superb events.
Life is sizzling in Klaipeda - come day or night. The variety of pubs, night clubs, restaurants and casinos can accommodate everybody's idea of fun.
